Cacti in Bloom

Hedge Hog Cactus, near Apache Junction, AZ
Spring is also the time for many types of cacti to bloom. Cacti have the most amazingly large and colorfully festive flowers, which is quite surprising given the sheer austerity of the desert landscape. I never tire of soaking in their beauty. The first is a type called hedge hog cactus, the second is a cholla cactus blooming in a bright shade of yellow (the New Mexico variety blooms a hot magenta similar to the shade of the hedge hog cactus), and the final few photos are of a yellow blooming variety of prickly pear. Enjoy!
