Cancer Survivors Park, Phoenix, AZ |
Between the Phoenix Art Museum and the Burton Barr Public Library is an entire park dedicated to the brave people who have fought cancer and survived. As someone whose mother bravely fought advanced cancer for many years, I have always been intrigued by this park, and so I decided to make a visit to it after my rounds at the Phoenix Art Museum. No, this park is not especially large, nor is the artwork on display grand in scale, but the artwork is wonderfully done and the landscaping of the park is beautiful. This is the perfect place for a peaceful respite away from the busy traffic on Central and McDowell avenues.

I found this sculpture to be very cool, with individual people of different generations entering and exiting a kind of portal or tunnel. Does this tunnel represent cancer with people journeying through its confines to eventual liberation? It's very well done. I took some photos at the front end of the sculpture, with the people emerging into freedom, but I felt that this angle presented a much more dramatic view.

Obelisk, Cancer Survivors Park, Phoenix, AZ |
I love the obelisk, placed in the heart of the park, where the majority of the native desert landscaping is located, including palo verde trees, saguaro and other cacti, and a few ocotillos. Very beautiful. There are also benches in this area, so people can sit and enjoy art mingling with beautiful plant-life.

What a beautiful park! The sculpture of the people walking through the portals is very moving, and the obelisk is just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYes, Ms. D. I am glad I made it to that park finally. The nearby Phoenix Art Museum is also a great place to enjoy art and has some beautiful sculptures on its grounds.
