Saying Goodbye to Chicago, Part Seven: Fourth Presbyterian Church

As a Jew, I have to say that my all-time favorite church in downtown Chicago is Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue, just across the street from the John Hancock Center and the Water Tower Place Mall. In the midst of Michigan Avenue's noisy hustle and bustle stands this specimen of intricate Gothic beauty and oasis for quiet contemplation. These are photos I took today.

One of the challenges I faced in trying to capture the magnificence of this church's architecture was the sanctuary's subdued lighting. As a result, I had problems capturing some of the painted architectural details found along the ceiling, much to my disappointment. But if you have the opportunity to visit this church, definitely look up, as additional beauty can be found when gazing at the vaulted ceiling.

This sanctuary is really an island of sanity amidst the hectic activity of downtown Chicago. Sometimes, when their services are over and I am visiting Michigan Avenue and in need of quiet reprieve, I will come into the sanctuary just to enjoy a few minutes of silent meditation. This sanctuary can provide a lot of spiritual solace, regardless of your particular faith.

Sitting in this green serenity and closing your eyes, you might never guess that you're in the middle of downtown Chicago! Part of the wonder of Fourth Presbyterian Church is that its architecture possesses a timeless beauty that can be so soothing.
