The Red Rocks of Sedona, Arizona

Out of all my Arizona photos, this one of the red rocks of Sedona in the fall is one of my favorites. You can't see it, but in the background there is a network of trails, allowing you to trek through the desert and enjoy the mountainous splendor. Sedona has some very unique rock formations, including one that looks like a church (called Cathedral Rock) and another that looks like a bell (with the obvious name of Bell Rock). These red rocks, below, have no name that I know of, but together they make up one of my favorite views of Sedona's natural beauty. I took this in fall of 2008.

Sedona is just remarkable. Positioned close to Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff, and at a reasonable distance from the Grand Canyon, Sedona is close to many other favorite Arizona destinations. Hiking is popular here, obviously, but so is an appreciation for art. Sedona has a nice selection of art galleries and new age stores. Go to Tlaquepaque, a shopping mall with restaurants and art galleries built to replicate the architecture of an old Spanish market. Make a visit to the Center for the New Age, where you can enjoy a nice selection of rocks or jewelry made with various stones. Learn more about their mystical properties, or get a reading done. Or just take one of the numerous hiking trails throughout the area and enjoy the natural beauty. Sedona is supposed to have a couple of energy vortexes, which would be of interest to the mystically inclined. Whether or not you believe in mystical energies, you will not be able to deny that there is a certain fundamental serenity that flows through Sedona. It's really an incredible place.
